USCG ISSUES BILGE ALARM SAFETY NOTICE

According to Lloyd's Register, the United States Coast Guard (USCG) has issued a safety notice pertaining to type ‘BilgMon 488’ bilge alarms, manufactured by Brannstrom of Sweden.

Attention of shipowners, ship operators, ship managers, ship masters and agents is drawn to the notice.

The USCG has reported instances of finding the stored data on older models of the bilge alarm to be corrupted, apparently due to the alarm’s back-up battery losing power and the lack of a replaceable battery.

IMO Resolution MEPC.107(49) requires 15ppm bilge alarms (oil content meters) to store data for at least 18 months and should be able to display or print a protocol for official inspec
