STUDY SAYS HYBRID POWER COULD SUIT FEEDER SHIPS

According to DNV GL, the shipping industry must cut GHG emissions, and a new joint study demonstrates how hybrid power systems are likely to prove an attractive option for container feeder vessels, and thus make a difference to the overall picture.

The study, by MAN Energy Solutions, DNV GL and Corvus Energy, looked into hybridisation options for larger cargo vessels with fluctuating energy needs. The ship chosen for the investigation was a 1,700 TEU diesel-powered container feeder vessel. The study showed that at current market conditions, using batteries as energy buffers would allow the generator sets to operate at optimum load continuously so one generator set could be spared.
