SOLIDUS LNG TANK READY FOR MARKET ENTRY

Thursday, September 26, 2019

Classification society Bureau Veritas has approved the design of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering’s new LNG cargo tank concept Solidus. It is the fifth design approval following similar from classification societies Lloyd's Register, ABS, Korean Register, and DNV-GL.

Solidus is a next-generation LNG cargo tank developed by DSME in 2017 to increase safety by preventing the leakage of LNG by applying a double metal barrier. By applying eco-friendly, high-performance insulation developed in cooperation with the German chemical company BASF, the natural vaporization rate is reduced.

In particular, Solidus is expected to provide a viable LNG tank alternative for Korea’s domestic shipbuilding industry, which DSME says “has struggled to secure profitability through the technology monopoly of certain foreign companies”. DSME expects Solidus to remove the dependency on foreign production.

A representative of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering said: “With this approval, [Solidus] is ready to enter the market.”
