SHI STOPS PRODUCTION FOLLOWING ACCIDENTS

Monday, May 6, 2019  (Comments: 1)

Samsung Heavy Industries’ main shipyard at Geoje Island, South Korea, is alleged to have halted operations following the issuance of a suspension order from South Korea’s Ministry of Employment and Labor.

The notice to temporarily cease operations follows a spate of fatal accidents, the most recent of which reportedly saw a shipyard worker killed from construction materials that fell from a crane during lifting operations.

The Korea Times reports Samsung Heavy Industries as doing all it can to prevent any safety incidents at its shipyards.

"The recent incidents are very unfortunate and we express our condolences to the bereaved family [sic]," a shipyard official told The Korea Times. "We will take all possible measures to create an accident-free workplace. Since the incident, laborers have stopped work at Geoje shipyard."

According to the newspaper, Korea has one of the highest numbers of workers killed in industrial accidents among members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
