SHI AND ZVEZDA JOIN FORCES ON ICEBREAKING LNG CARRIERS AND SHUTTLE TANKERS

Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has entered into cooperation with Zvezda of Russia and concluded a contract to build LNG carriers for the Arctic LNG 2 project.

SHI says it was selected by Zvezda Shipyard as its partner for the construction of Arctic LNG carriers in Russia thanks to SHI's expertise and technological prowess. SHI will assist Zvezda with the construction of the vesels and provide technological support.The two sides have additionally established of a joint venture for cooperation on shuttle tankers where SHI has the highest market share, bringing it one step closer to the Russian market.

The LNG carriers will be built to an SHI design, and will use LNG as primary fuel. They will have 45 MW of power capacity, enabling them to safely carry LNG while breaking ice up to 2.1m thick in -52 deg C.

SHI claims expertise in icebreaking and winterisation, having, In 2005, entered into the icebreaking cargo ships market by winning an order for the world's first Arctic shuttle tanker that can both advance and reverse. In 2008, it received an order for the world's first drillship for the Arctic regions and successfully delivered it. SHI has accumulated experience in LNG through orders for more than 140 LNG carriers.

"The contract we have signed proves that SHI has a competitive edge in icebreaking and LNG carriers. As we expand icebreaking technology into LNG carriers, we will be able to establish a solid foothold in the Arctic ships market," said an official of SHI.

SHI says it has won 60 out of 138 orders for shuttle tankers placed to date globally, representing 43% of the global market share.
