SCHOTTEL OPTIMISES CONTROLLABLE PITCH PROPELLER HUB

Schottel says that a new generation of its CP hub provides further optimisation of its five-bladed controllable pitch propeller concept.

These propellers are said to be optimally suited for higher speeds and applications which require high power density, low pressure pulses and minimised noise generation. The new hub shape reduces the risk of cavitation, which can occur in demanding, high-load applications. The first CPPs with the new hub have been delivered for military vessel projects.

The new hub features a full-feathering mode in which the propeller blades are set parallel to the flow to minimise drag resistance. This leads to further optimised propulsion efficiency and reduced fuel consumption as well as lower maintenance costs. Thanks to the latest mechanical design and hydrodynamic techniques, it offers increased efficiency and a blade foot with decreased exposure to cavitation.

Intensive model tests have verified the hydrodynamic results achieved by means of CFD, which is an integral part of Schottel's hydrodynamic design process, used to simulate and analyse a wide range of different applications.

The propeller's robust design is said to keep maintenance requirements to a minimum and ensure a long service lifetime. The five-bladed propeller covers a power range up to 30,000 kW with propeller diameters up to 8.0m.
