PPG INTRODUCES NEW NOVAGUARD AND SIGMASHIELD COATINGS

Sunday, December 2, 2018

Two new coatings have been introduced in the US and Canada by US-based PPG. PPG NOVAGUARD 810 ER has been developed to protect the fuel and ballast tanks and the internal and external superstructures of tugs and barges, while of PPG SIGMASHIELD 880 is an ultra-durable one-coat coating for vessels and rigs.

Both new products were launched last week  in New Orleans at the International Workboat Show.

Commenting on the introduction of the new tank coating, Al Kaminsky, PPG marine manager, protective and marine coatings, U.S. and Canada, said: “The commercial marine market in the U.S. and Canada continues to be very competitive, and owners are looking for products that can give them an edge as well as high performance. PPG NOVAGUARD 810 ER passes on the advantages of cost savings and high performance to customers, enabling them to work their assets harder while being assured of extended service life.”

PPG NOVAGUARD 810 ER coating is a two-component, solvent-free, amine rapid-cured novolac epoxy coating. The applicator-friendly coating allows single-coat coverage to a wet film thickness of more than 50mils without curtaining, sagging or running. Its optically active pigment (OAP) technology also enables non-destructive ultraviolet (UV) light holiday detection.

In addition to PPG NOVAGUARD 810 ER coating, PPG recently unveiled PPG SIGMASHIELD 880 high-performance coating for the offshore market in the U.S. and Canada. This multipurpose, surface-tolerant epoxy protects assets in extreme marine environments, including offshore infrastructure and all types of offshore support vessels.

“Today’s offshore marine and energy assets, whether they are oil and gas rigs, windfarms or the vessels that serve them, demand the very highest levels of corrosion protection in extreme operating environments,” said Kaminsky. “PPG SIGMASHIELD 880 multipurpose, surface-tolerant epoxy delivers on PPG’s commitment to help owners manage application and maintenance costs.”

The high-performance product’s one-coat, direct-to-metal formulation delivers very fast application times and faster return to service after coating, with touch-ups possible using a thin-film epoxy.

PPG SIGMASHIELD 880 offers superior abrasion, impact, seawater and corrosion resistance with improved cathodic disbondment protection and excellent resistance to chemical splashes and spills. Its shorter dry-to-touch means assets can be returned to service more quickly, with the coating continuing to cure upon immersion in water.

PPG also announced the creation of a new marine sales team for the U.S. and Canada that will provide expertise and advice across the complete range of PPG marine coatings.

Scott Doering, PPG Director of Sales, Protective and Marine Coatings, U.S said: “This focused commercial marine group will provide not only excellent in-person support at shipyards throughout the U.S. and Canada, but also owner support. We also continue to develop industry-leading solutions that provide application efficiencies and extended product performance, reducing downtime and owner costs while providing protection across all kinds of fixed and floating marine assets.”
