NORSEPOWER LINKS UP WITH GREEN SHIP OF THE FUTURE PROJECT

Wind propulsion company Norsepower says it has now joined Green Ship of the Future (GSF), which seeks to explore the road towards emission-free maritime transport by ensuring more environmental and financially sustainable consumption within the shipping industry.

With membership across the shipping industry including among others, authorities, classification societies, shipowners, and suppliers, GSF unites industry leaders with the common goal of finding innovative ways for emission-free transport using digital technologies and leveraging existing energy efficient technology. As part of its new membership, Norsepower has committed to joining a number of its new partners on a project which looks to develop a retrofit package that will contribute significantly to the energy savings on board selected vessel types, all representative of high volume vessel series.

Project partners include fellow GSF members ABB, Alfa Laval, Bureau Veritas, BOS Global, Clorius Controls, Danfoss, Danish Energy Consulting, DESMI, DNV GL, Greensteam HAFNIA, MAN Energy Solutions, Norsepower, Optimum Voyage, Orcan, Rolls-Royce, and Royston.

The partnership between Norsepower and GSF is consistent with the long-term commitment to safe, reliable, environmentally-friendly, and energy-efficient marine transportation globally. Norsepower is a clean technology and engineering company pioneering modern auxiliary wind propulsion for the global maritime industry. Its Rotor Sail Solution technology is currently installed on three vessels (Bore’s MV Estraden, Viking Line’s MS Viking Grace, and Maersk Tankers’ Maersk Pelican) and has achieved over 35,000 hours in operation, saving more than 4,500 tonnes of CO2 in the process. The solution has delivered independently-verified fuel savings with potential of up to 20%.

Most recently, the Norsepower Rotor Sail Solution received the first-ever type approval design certificate granted by DNV GL to an auxiliary wind propulsion system onboard a commercial ship. The type approval was issued in March 2019 – following a design assessment of Norsepower’s 30m by 5m Rotor Sail, two of which have been installed onboard the Maersk Pelican LR2 tanker.
