NEW SHIPYARD PROPOSED FOR LONDONíS RIVER

Tuesday, September 11, 2018

Details are emerging of a new shipyard proposed for Albert Island, on the River Thames just to the east of London City Airport.

The yard’s proposed activities appear to be targeted more towards river vessels than large sea-going ships, despite the area being part of the former London Docks, and the fact that the proposed facility will include what is being described as Europe’s largest ship lift. The architect’s rendering suggests the yard will be able to handle offshore support vessels as well as small river craft.

The development is masterminded by architectural practice Haworth Tompkins as part of London + Regional’s £300 million regeneration scheme for the 10ha site. Haworth Tompkins is working with landscape architect LDA Design on the shipyard proposal.
