MOL AND SHI RECEIVE AiP FOR ULCC WINDSHIELD DESIGN

Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) and Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) have received Approval In Principle (AIP) from DNV GL to MOL for a Bow Wind-Shield design for Ultra-Large Container Carriers (ULCCs).

The newly developed Bow Wind-Shield reduces the wind resistance on the hull body of the ship while under way, and is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by about 2%–4% from a ULCC. This is based on technology developed by both MOL and SHI.

MOL has developed and installed a bow wind shield on an existing mid-size containership and confirmed CO2 reduction by about 2% in real-running conditions. SHI also has developed a bow wind shield for ULCCs.

Introducing both companies' technology, MOL and SHI have started a joint-development project for an optimal Bow Wind-Shield design for ULCC and achieved a significant level of effect and established practical structure, leading to the AIP certification from DNVGL.
