South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries has received a "World First" award for its NoNOx NOx Reduction SCR system, at the 2018 World First Product Certificate Ceremony, held at the Grand Intercontinental Hotel, in Seoul.

World First-class products are awarded only to technolgies that have the fifth largest market share, the first in Korea, and 30% or more of similar domestic products, and have been announced annually since 2001 by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce.

The selected nitrogen oxide reduction system is an eco-friendly device that uses an ammonia catalyst to reduce emissions of  nitrogen oxides (NOx) by up to 99%.

HHI says vessels’ engines equipped with the technology can meet the International Maritime Organization's Tier III criteria for air pollution prevention even with regular diesel fuel.

Since 2012, Hyundai Heavy Industries has developed a number of nitrogen oxides abatement devices installed in mid- and large-sized engines and set the market ahead. 800 systems have been installed to date.
