Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) has signed a contract with Algeria's state-owned shipping company Algerie Ferries to build a luxury roll-on/roll-off passenger ship.

Capacity of the ferry will be around 1,800 passengers and 600 vehicles. Delivery is scheduled for August 2020. It will be 199.9m long, 30m wide, and operate at 24 knots.

"It is the first ro-ro passenger ship GSI will build for an African company, and has great significance," said Chen Ji, president of GSI. "It is an important cooperation project between China and Algeria in the development of the ocean economy and shipping industry under the Belt and Road Initiative."

The contract includes a six-month training course by GSI for Algerie Ferries' staff.

Negotiations are said to be in progress for addition newbuildings for Algerie Ferries.

GSI says its order book now includes 13 contracts to build ro-ro passengers ships for foreign companies, all expected to be delivered by 2022.
