FOUR MORE POLAR EXPEDITION CRUISESHIPS FOR PORTUGUESE OPERATOR

Wednesday, January 22, 2020

Danish ship designer Knud E Hansen says that Portuguese expedition cruise line Mystic Cruises has placed an order for a further four Explorer Class polar vessels, due for delivery in 2023.

Mystic has previously ordered three of the 9,300gt, 200-passenger capacity Explorer Class vessels, designed by Knud E Hansen and with basic engineering executed by Leadship, from WestSea Viana Shipyard in Portugal. The first, World Explorer, was delivered in 2019 and is currently chartered to Quark Expeditions. The remaining two vessels, World Voyager and World Navigator, are due to enter service in 2020 and 2021, respectively.

The four additional ships of this class, to be named World Traveller, World Seeker, World Adventurer and World Discoverer, will be operated by Mystic’s US brand Atlas Ocean Voyages. Like the previous series, they will be 126m long and 19m beam, and will employ a Kongsberg-supplied complete propulsion package, comprising two Bergen C25:33L8P main engines and a Bergen C25:33L6P auxiliary, connected to a low voltage AFE ‘Savecube’ variable-speed electric power electric system, for maximum efficiency. Kongsberg is supplying automation and control systems, DP equipment, thrusters, steering gear and a Promas system with two CP propellers integrated with flap rudders.
