FIRE AT FINNISH SHIPYARD

Shipbuilder Meyer Turku has reported a fire on the deck 15 of cruise ship 'Costa Smeralda', which is under construction at the yard.

The fire started when stored material inside the ship was ignited by welding operations. The shipyard’s fire brigade was the first on site and started firefighting measures. Local fire brigades arrived shortly after. The ship was evacuated. Work on the ship was able to restart after about 90 minutes.
About 10 personnel suffered smoke inhalation and two received slight injuries. The yard said that there was only minor damage and the build, for Costa Crociere, is continuing on schedule.
