Chinese builder Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co has successfully delivered what it says is the world’s first intelligent VLCC to owner China Merchants Steamship (CMES).

The 308,000 dwt New Journey features integrated systems including ship navigation, auxiliary autopilot, smart liquid cargo management, integrated energy efficiency management, equipment operation and maintenance, and ship-shore communication, using a structured network information platform. The ship, designed and built under one of China's key national research projects, is said to be the first vessel to receive class notations of i-SHIP (I, N, M, Et, C) and OMBO from China Classification Society.

The builder reports that on sea trials all systems performed 100%, enabling the trials to be completed two days ahead of schedule.

The New Journey is the 97th VLCC delivered by the state-owned shipbuilder Dalian.
