Reports in the Indian media from the town of Kochi say that Cochin Shipyard (CSL) plans to open a new 'knowledge centre' which will house the yard's Marine Engineering Training Institute (METI), currently located within the shipyard premises.

The state-owned CSL is establishing the new 70.000ft2 training centre, to be known as 'Prathiba Sagar' as part of its efforts to make Kochi the maritime hub of India. Alongside the new centre, CSL plans to set up an ancillary park, in which it hopes that 3,000 maritime sector jobs can be created. CSL says that some 25 companies have already expressed interest in settiing up shop within the park.

As well as METI's marine engineering courses, the new centre will host shorter courses providing certification in skills such as welding, fitting and instrumentation, which are aimed at improving the employability of potential candidates. CSL says that the centre will begin training its first students in early 2019.
