The unknown offender attempted to sell the material on the Internet and made extortion threats, but Austal says it did not respond to these. The breach is being investigated by the Australian Cyber Security Centre and the Australian Federal Police.

Austal said that its US business, which uses a different computer system from the Western Australian yard, was not affected, and neither any material relating to defence contracts nor items pertaining to national security were taken.

In a statement Austal said that its information systems and technology team had restored the security and integrity of the company’s data systems, and were implementing additional security measures to prevent further breaches.
